Before the Golf Course
Learning golf is really not too difficult. You will need to find the golf clubs to benefit the highest success rate in your game. Starting with your golf clubs you will need to understand a few concepts about yourself to help aid your decision when purchasing your set.
Your body type will ultimately determine the club type is best for you. If you're a heavy swinger then selecting a heavier club will be your best but you are in it for the long haul a more natural approach will be ideal.
If you have the money to throw away then you stop by your local golf supply store and see what they have to offer. I have to stress this point to the fullest. Price doesn't always mean a better game. Price means your clubs will be more tailored to your needs. I would try out swinging two different clubs. You will almost immediately feel the difference in the swing.
If you're new to the game and don't want to drop a lot of money on clubs you can opt out for some new used clubs. When I say used this doesn't mean that they are beat to hell and belonged to someone's grandpa. Most golf store will only buy slightly worn sets. The set I found didn't even have a scratch. There are a lot of resurfacing strategies that golf store can use to make a club look new again.
I recommend finding a good used set of iron and give them a few swings to find the one set that fits your swing and feels the most comfortable when swing the club. A lot of golf supply store will allow you to test out the set if you place a credit card down for security.
If the set that you purchased was only an iron set then you will want to go ahead and find a decent driver for around $35 to $50. Drivers don't have to be expensive epically when you are getting started. There will be a lot of things that you will learn over time that will aid you in your decision for an expensive club. You will just have to trust me on this for now.
Another club that you will need is your putter. You can grab one for about the same price as your driver. With both clubs I recommend purchasing one that feels the most natural in your hand because you're going to be using them alot in this game.
Your set is complete. Now you're ready for the other items to bring with you starting with your golf bag. I recommend grabbing majority of your items at Walmart simply because the prices are much lower. Shop around the various golf supply store for specials. A lot of times they will have some things on sale that are even lower than Walmart's prices.
When it comes to golf balls this will ultimately come down to your swing style. To help you in this select remember back to the driving range when you were hitting your practice balls. What did the ball do majority of the time? If the ball always seemed to hook off into the distance then grab yourself a ball to help correct that. If your ball seemed to go straight majority of the time then you might opt to get a ball that gives you a longer driver shot off the tee.
Practice makes perfect. If you get a set of balls and they just do the opposite of what you want them to do then you might need to look at another type.
Tees are cheap and come in large bags from Walmart and should be the least of your major decisions. The one thing that I will stress is that if you choose to purchase an oversized driver then you will need to get long tees as normal tees will put the ball in the dirt more times than not. You are now prepared to take on Tiger but you may need some additional toys to keep it fun on the course.
Always grab a golf umbrella because you will kick yourself when there's a torrential down pour and said you didn't need one.
A golf towel to attach to your bag will help you after that torrential down pour to wipe your club from the mud.
